The Holy Eucharist Rite II * Eucharistic Prayer A

We continue our “tour” of the Book of Common Prayer, exploring the prayers of Rite II. Some points of interest:

Eucharistic Prayer A is based on the historic prayer of the Episcopal Church (found essentially in Rite I, Prayer I, re-written in more concise and modern language. It is the shortest of the Eucharistic Prayers found in the 1979 (current) Book of Common Prayer.
The prayers of Rite II tend to include an anticipatory dimension, looking toward the fulfillment of the kingdom of God, and Christ’s return, that is absent from earlier eucharistic prayers, and unlike earlier prayers, this prayer includes a specific petition for the Holy Spirit to descend upon the gathered people as well as on the gifts of bread and wine.

The post-communion prayer on p. 366 is the modern language version of a prayer that has appeared in every English Book of Common Prayer, with some slight changes in phrasing as language evolved, and the theology of the Eucharist came to focus less on the death of Jesus than on the fullness of the redemptive work of Christ.

The Salutation (“The Lord be with you/And also with you”) is based on the greeting between Boaz and his workers in Ruth 2:4. Other ancient liturgies used “Peace be with you/And also with you” as an opening salutation

Nursery Care and Funday School. There is nursery care for infants to two-year-olds during  today’s 10:00 a.m. service. Ages two through six meet for the first part of the service for a lesson and craft, then join the congregation during the peace. Volunteers are needed, so please look for the sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in the old kitchen.

Refreshments in the Garden. We continue with our summer schedule today and will be serving refreshments in the garden at 11:15 a.m.  Please consider signing up to host a Sunday. Lemonade will be provided or you can serve your own punch recipe. There is a sign-up sheet on the old kitchen bulletin board.

“No matter where you're from, we're glad you're our neighbor.” Perhaps one of these signs greeted you as you came into church this morning. This summer, Trinity is honoring the great commandment to love our neighbors as ourselves (Mark 12:29-31), with these signs in different languages.  If you'd like a sign for your own lawn, they are available in the church office for a donation of any amount (our cost is $10.00). Donations over the cost of the signs will go to Trinity's Outreach Commission.

Family Outreach Events in August. Bring your children to play with recent immigrant children and help them get acquainted with our community. Trinity has invited 3 refugee families to these events in July and August, and we need Trinity families to come and join in the fun. The parents don’t speak English, but the children do, and the language of play and caring for others is universal. And there is always Google Translate to help with communication. Upcoming events are Tuesdays, Aug.  15 and 29 from 6:45-8:00 PM in the Parish Hall. To sign up, please go to www.trinitymooorestown.org and click on Upcoming Events for the Sign-up Genius link. Please contact Sarah Senno at sennofamily@gmail.com or 609-678-8992 with any questions.
